The working farm guest house La Plume is located in Oudtshoorn, South Africa’s ostrich farming centre, at the heart of the stunning semi-desert Little Karoo. No more than nine rooms are being offered by the small but cosy hotel.
Having been built in Victorian style over a century ago in 1900, the impressive main building houses the dining room where breakfast is served and dinner can be arranged on request.
The houses speciality is a mouth-watering ostrich steak cooked to perfection in accordance with an ancient family recipe. There is no point in asking, the secret recipe is being guarded by the owners like the crown jewels. Vegetarians need not worry. It might be a paradise for meat lovers but highly delicious vegetarian dishes are also regularly prepared.
An exquisite wine from the Plume’s wine cellar completes the sumptuous meal.

Five of the rooms have been arranged with a double setup while the remaining four offer twin bedding. Providing more space and also perfect for families is the so called “Cottage”, a suite with two separate bedrooms, two lounges and a kitchen. All room’s facilities comprise a TV and a mini bar.
The air-conditioning effectively chills the summer’s blistering heat so you can sleep in total comfort. A coffee and tea maker allows you to enjoy an instant refreshment at your convenience.

An interesting ninety minute program will familiarise you with the finesse of ostrich breeding. The tour culminates in an ostrich race – your participation is required! Mount an ostrich yourself or choose to bet on the seemingly most competent rider and bird team. However, the city of the feather barons has a lot more to offer than “just” ostriches.
