Another popular option is to board a boat and spend the day out on the water deep sea fishing. Denis Island is famous for the excellent chances of hooking a Big One. Sword fishes, sharks and groupers are frequently caught in these waters.

 

The coral island was named after the Frenchman Denis de Trobriand who alighted on the shore in 1773. Legend has it that hidden somewhere on the island is a bottle containing the historical proof Denis Island was claimed in the name of the French king.

 

However, fate has so far concealed the alleged historical treasure, the discovery yet to be made. Keep your eyes peeled while exploring every niche of the island!

 

Fortunately, history left some more manifest fingerprints: The island’s lighthouse dates back to 1908. Denis also houses the Seychelles’ only ecumenical chapel. Both are well worth a visit.

Only a small distance from Denis, the Seychelles’ plateau drops sharply to the deep blue depths of the Indian Ocean. The spectacular diving sites on the drop enjoy a world wide reputation for their intact coral and the big fish which are attracted to the area in large numbers.

Taj Denis Island feature a total of 23 finely appointed cottages plus a “Family” an “Executive Villa”. Each unit is equipped not only with a generous veranda but also with a private courtyard complete with an exciting outdoor shower. Design elements reveal cleverly crafted parallels to the surrounding nature, accentuated by Creole decorations.

 

Lacking no comfort, the Executive Villa exceeds all expectations, setting new standards: The elegantly furnished 325 square metres large suite comprises a lounge, bed room with ceiling ventilator, bathroom, ocean view veranda, private courtyard with an outdoor shower, air-conditioning, tea and coffee making facilities, hairdryer, ironing board and a mini bar.

 

The almost equally extravagant Family Villa “Prince Noir” offers similar comforts but is limited to a nevertheless astounding 169 square metres. A separate bedroom, lounge, air-conditioning, bathroom with a hairdryer, courtyard with outdoor shower, ocean view terrace, ceiling ventilator, tea and coffee making facilities, ironing board and a mini bar come included.

 

The 23 remaining cottages offer a choice: 18 units feature air-conditioning while five are limited to ceiling ventilators. The 90 square metres large cottages feature a range of comforts similar to the suites. All bedrooms and even the verandas facing the ocean are equipped with ventilators.

 

Further facilities include a private courtyard with outdoor shower, bathroom, hairdryer, tea and coffee making facilities, ironing board and a mini bar. Room service is available in all of the Taj Denis Island Resort’s units.

An old village dating back to 1935 houses the charming ecumenical chapel and the lighthouse. The traditional, charming buildings bring back to life the old times. Stop by the old cemetery for a casual stroll and insight into the island’s family history.

 

Having indulged in the island’s fantastic beaches, divers will be thrilled to set out to discover the stunning underwater world. The dive sites scattered around Denis Island are of international fame.

 

Big fish and dramatic formations are abundant especially where the Seychelles’ plateau breathtakingly plunges down to the deep sea. Coral reefs have remained unaffected by El Nino influences and are densely populated by coral fish belonging to hundreds of species.

 

This dramatic drop-off is also the chief reason why Denis Island ranks among the world’s most noteworthy deep sea fishing grounds. Cast a line and, should you never have deep sea fished before, give it a try to feel that nail-chewing thrill of the first nibbles and gentle tugs on you line.

 

Those who would like to exercise to keep in shape may choose between tennis, table tennis, windsurfing, kayaking, sailing, billiard and running on the specially prepared track – all at you disposal.
