Activities

Once a tiny village, El Calafate has gradually grown into a bustling town and holiday resort thanks to its great natural attractions.

It is not just the world-famous Perito Moreno Glacier, El Calafate may be seen as the gateway to Patagonia’s vast wilderness. El Calafate is a vibrant town offering countless outdoor activities.

The centre of town is well worth a short stroll. Visit the Santa Teresita del Niño Jesus Church. The small church accommodates two statues that are El Calafate’s sacred hallmarks. The Regional Museum introduces you to the laid-back outpost’s past, documented with historic pictures, as well as its transformation into its adventurous, modern counterpart. The fascinating surrounding nature also receives due presentation.

The Glaciarium is dedicated to the intriguing study of glaciers. Learn more about their slow formation and ceaseless motion. Interactively designed, the informative museum is a wealth of knowledge about the region. And, of course, every visit is best concluded with a visit to the ice bar.

But then, inevitably, there is the real thing: Explore the Los Glaciares National Park. Having been declared a world miracle, the protected environment reaches peaks as high as 3360 metres above sea level with the Cerro Fitz Roy. Approximately every four to ten years, the water of the adjacent lake rises and gives cause to a unique phenomenon: the Perito Moreno Glacier bursting thunderously into pieces. The Uppsala Glacier is the region’s largest and even includes its own lake: A boat ride around the lake is the perfect opportunity to observe the peculiar formations and colours of the ice all around.

Yet another of the region’s attractions is the Walichu Cave. Travel back in time and discover ancient rock paintings dating back as far as 4000 years. It is also worth mentioning that the surroundings are simply stunningly beautiful!

Your stay at the Eolo will certainly not be complete until you have visited Lake Argentino and cruised through the glacier canal, admiring the Perito Moreno’s vast expanse. The glacier has been declared a world miracle and UNESCO world heritage site. And with just a little luck, you may even visit chunks of ice tumbling into the water after having been forced loose by the immense pressure of the bordering walls.

Those with a taste for adventure and sports will be thrilled by El Calafate’s many activities including mountain biking, hiking, golfing and sailing. On a different day, try your hand at fly fishing on Lake Roca. Long running tracks invite you to explore at a fast pace. Or take it slow mounted securely atop a gentle horse. The mountains are paradise for mountaineers or even for ice climbing. Set off on your own or as part of an organised tour. There are plenty of options. Enjoy!
