When the Trogon House & Forest Spa first opened its doors in 2006 it caused a furore in the South African tourism industry. For the first time ever, a hotel decided to lodge no more than two to eight guests at a time, thus adding new meaning to the term private hotel.

The Trogon House is nestled into the native forest halfway between Keurbooms River and Natures Valley. The magnificent coastline along this stretch ranks among the most enchanting and pristine areas of the Garden Route.
The journey to the Trogon House in itself is an experience: The road winds its way past an elephant, bird and monkey sanctuary before reaching the one and a half kilometre long private path though lush vegetation and soaring canopies above.
Ending at a clearing, the path opens up on a sunlit pool deck high above the treetops and commanding spectacular views of the forest’s vast expanse all around.
The forest itself is the backbone of the construction. Resting on the massive trunks, the lodge spins a web of glass walls, open ceilings and wooden decks among the trees. The ingenious construction lets you intimately experience the forest and nature without sacrificing your cherished comfort.
Having been inspired by his extensive travels to exotic countries and cultures, the private owner and director of the hotel has personally created the concept and design of the stunning Trogon House.
The lovingly decorated interior is proof to the exquisite taste and attention to detail which shaped this serene retreat. Every piece was handpicked and the many treasure include finest Egyptian linen, silk and crystal combined with exotic antiques and precious African artefacts.
The main building houses a spacious reception and two luxurious bedrooms and is connected to the secluded forest suites via elevated boardwalks permitting insight into the life near the canopies. A second connection leads to the secluded forest spa for your private use only.

Living
The distinguishing mark of the Trogon House is the uncompromising privacy. The entire complex has been designed to exclusively house no more than one couple or small groups of up to 8 people.

Your private service team will arrange breakfast, attend to your room or organise excursions as you wish. Fully trained therapist carry out the sophisticated treatments (a surcharge may apply) at the spa … a more exclusive service is hardly imaginable.
A personal cook awaits your orders and will work his mouth-watering magic at your request (a surcharge may apply) or prepare you a sumptuous lunchbox for an excursion to one of the region’s many attractions.
The Trogon House offers a total of only four bedrooms which have each been elaborately designed, an unusually large king-size bed holding the promise of sweet dreams to come. Under floor heating, satellite-TV and a telephone add to the list facilities. Connected to each bedroom is a finely-appointed bathroom with a stone tub and a separate shower.
The main living room’s centre is the large fireplace providing welcome warmth and a cosy atmosphere in the colder season. Adjacent to the living room is beautifully designed dining area. Panoramic glass sliding doors give access to the spacious, elevated wooden deck. Partially covered, it provides protection from both the sun and rain and additionally, as a highlight, it features a swimming pool embedded into the floor. Both the deck and the pool offer a fantastic view of the natural surrounding best enjoyed with a South African wine.

Activities
The complex’s highlight is doubtlessly the Forest Spa housing a Jacuzzi in front of a cosy, open fireplace and furthermore a glass sauna commanding a unique view of the ambient pristine nature.

Apart from the Trogon House’s sweet proposal of peaceful privacy, regional attractions and adventurous sports call for you attention. Mountain biking, horse riding and rock climbing may be some of the options which appeal to those seeking to explore the pristine nature in a sportive fashion.
Test you skill on one of the many challenging eighteen-hole golf courses which are easily placed among the world’s most scenic courses. Needless to say that the ocean is one large playground for water sports enthusiast.
Sailing, diving, water skiing and deep-sea fishing are all available at your request. Venture inland and take a tumbling wild water rafting trip down the Storm River.
The mouth of the untamed Storm River is protected as part of the scenic Tsitsikamma National Park near Plettenberg Bay. At the spectacular estuary the river’s deep gorge meets the wide expanse of the Indian Ocean.
Spanning the mouth of the river is South Africa’s longest suspension bridge not recommendable to those suffering easily from motion sickness. Explore the depths of the Storm River’s gorge on a boat heading upstream.
Just an hour’s ride and about 30 kilometres to the north of Oudtshoorn are the well worth seeing Cango Caves.
The Cango Caves form the entrance to largest and most complex system of stalactite caves to be found anywhere in the world. Visit the renowned dripstone called Cleopatra’s Needle. The formation reaches 9 metres and is estimated to be over 150 000 years old.
A constant 18° C can be expected in the caves all year round and you are advised to bring some extra clothing in summer. Throughout the system a total of 416 steps have to be mastered requiring a modes level of fitness.
Very close to the hotel, several sanctuaries and wildlife parks are well-worth a visit and especially entertaining for children. Visit the Elephant Sanctuary and experience a safari from an elephant’s back. Very recommendable is also a visit to Monkeyland, housing several species of endangered monkeys, or to Bird’s of Eden, a vast protected park for rare species of birds.
Last but not least, the numerous spectacular beaches of the Garden Route along this stretch promise all the classic pleasures of a seaside vacation. First among the beaches is the broad and golden Plettenberg Bay beach.
