South West Australia is mind-blowingly vast and diverse. Travelling south from Perth, the first highlight is the wine-growing region Margaret River, approximately three hours away. Apart from its superb wines, Margaret River is famous for its perfect breakers. Indubitably, the region is one of the best surfing spots on the entire west coast, complete with sweeping sand beaches for a relaxing spell. Picking up the road heading south again, Blackwood River Valley and Southern Forest are two charming regions featuring lush forests, a breathtakingly beautiful coast and more vineyards. Not just the coast but also the inland is worth a visit: The Wave Rock is a bizarre stone formation, 15 metres high, 100 metres long and shaped like a wave about to break. The bright red rock was formed by the relentless forces of Mother Nature: the wind, rain, heat and cold. The Wave is one of nature’s most artistic creations, decorated by vertical black stripes left by the torrential rain. A photographer’s delight, the Wave is especially photogenic in the early morning light. Australia’s endless southern coast is a lonely wonderland composed of steep cliffs, idyllic bays and miles and miles of immaculate beaches and crystal-clear water. Around Albany, the setting is especially spectacular and countless islets off the shore add extra flair. Albany forms part of the Great Southern Coastal Region. The Giant Treetops Walk is an elevating experience. At a soaring height of approximately 40 metres, you casually stroll along the canopy of one of the world’s oldest primeval forests, the impressive trees easily averaging a few hundred years. Venturing out onto the endless road that leads east, you eventually reach Esperance Bay of Islands – a beach paradise par excellence! Wide, white sand beaches stretch as far as the eye can see, often without another soul in sight. Those who seek serene solitude in a striking setting will be thrilled by the inspiring vastness. The easiest way to get around is driving a 4x4 along the endless beaches – an exciting experience! The islands that pepper the coast are equally stunning. Take a boat out to sea and alight on deserted beaches, feeling like Robinson Crusoe. Of course, the region also has its share of gorgeous national parks, like the Cape le Grand or the Fitzgerald National Park, that offer superb hiking, fishing and swimming. Turning your back on the glittering coast, the inland presents a more rugged charm: the unvarnished Australian outback! In fact, it is Australia’s Golden Outback.
