At the southern end of Chief’s Island, tucked in amongst the ebony trees you’ll find Stanley’s Camp, which is comprised of eight typical African-style safari tents.

Besides an incredible array of birdlife, you’ll also meet wildlife such as elephants, buffalo, giraffes, hippos, lions, leopards, cheetahs, and wild dogs. An especially large buffalo population and their accompanying predators ensure an exciting game watching experience, be it with all-terrain vehicles, on foot, or in a traditional Mokoro.
An absolute highlight on offer at Stanley’s is the possibility to go on a foot safari with three of the local elephants, and to experience at first hand how they interact with their environment. The goal of this registered not-for-profit foundation “Living with Elephants” is to bring humans and elephants closer together.
Besides this, Stanley’s also offers four-by-four open-topped safari drives, and Mokoro trips through the local waterways. Co-operation with sister camps Chief’s Camp and Chobe Chilwero enable a diversity of ways to make your Botswana holiday a nature-lover’s dream.

Living
Stanley’s Camp is located in a private reserve, some 105,000 hectares in size. From here, one has year-round access to the waterways of the Okavango Delta.

Stanley’s Camp is tiny – only eight luxury tents are offer, each built on teak platforms. The luxurious and tasteful furnishings will leave no wish unfulfilled.
The delicately appointed tents exude classic Africa flair; handcrafted beds finished with the finest linen, antique furniture individually selected and oriental carpets that call to mind colonial times.
Each unit offers en-suite facilities, with shower and WC. A ceiling fan ensures a comfortable and airy room, and a private veranda offers a sensational view over the seemingly endless landscape.
A silenced generator and accompanying batteries ensure the camp has uninterrupted power. Hammocks and easy chairs on the decks are perfect for relaxation in the African sunshine. The rustic-style restaurant and lounge area extend over various roofed teak-decked levels.

Stanley’s Lodge offers boat safaris, and also land-based activities, such as game drives and bush tours. Most tours are conducted in the early morning or late afternoon, but other times can also be arranged.
After a small breakfast of muesli, hot drinks and pastries, we set off for around four hours' animal discovery. It’s almost certain you’ll have the chance to see lions, giraffes, zebras, various members of the bok family, apes, and elephants.
What you do with the time after brunch and before the later afternoon activities is entirely up to you. As soon as the sun nears the horizon, many seek out a comfortable spot to watch the spectacular colours play across the sky with a sundowner in hand.
The fantastic sunset in the Okavango Delta is definitely like no other sunset you’ve ever seen. The camp’s other strongpoint, animal watching, is also probably the best in the Delta. Even the shy and rare wild dog is at home here.
But what really sets this camp apart is the neighbourhood group of elephants, who have grown up with humans, and actually trust them, too. Jabu, Thembi and Morula are their Zulu names, and they have become slowly accustomed to the presence of humans in their habitat.
You can get right up close to these pachyderms – close enough to touch – and have a chance to get to know their differing characters. It’s an experience you won’t quickly forget.
