Few places on earth are so starkly beautiful, harsh yet pristine: In beautiful Ushuaia lush green forests climb snow-capped mountains and a rough, wind-swept sea meets ancient glaciers. Ushuaia is the capital city of the distant southern tip of Argentina known as the Tierra del Fuego and the gateway to Antarctica.

Despite its rugged setting on the banks of the Beagle Channel, Ushuaia has evolved from a laid-back outpost to a thriving tourism destination. World’s end has become comfortable. And certainly, the region offers spectacular landscapes and outdoor activities as well as the world’s most southernmost winter sports’ arenas – some, with a view of the ocean.

Most hotels are located en-route towards the Martial Glacier. A cable car may comfortably take you to the top. However, warm and weather-proof clothing is highly advisable for all outdoor activities year-round. Even those hitting only the city streets in the summer months (January and February) will want to stay warm.

The most popular hiking trail leads up to the peak of the Martial Glacier at 1300 metres above sea level. At the top, you will be rewarded with a spectacular view out over the city and its surroundings. Those that would like to keep it comfortable may board the Tren del Fin del Mundo: a bright red, historic steam train that connects the city to the nearby national park.

San Martin Street is the place to visit for world’s end’s shopping: It runs parallel to the coast right through Ushuaia’ centre. However, having finished your shopping, we highly recommend a visit to the Tierra del Fuego National Park that lies 12 kilometres west of the city. The region’s unique forest and moor landscapes may be explored on a series of trails. Tie up your hiking boots and set off to explore the southern hemisphere’s untamed wilderness!

Another recommendation goes to the Estancia Harberton, the region’s oldest farm that has braved the hard conditions of Tierra del Fuego Island for uncountable years. Those travelling with a rental car may continue their journey farther east into the sparsely populated region around Estancia Moat.

And then, at some stage, you will need to venture out onto the water: A boat trip takes you to the nearby islands that are a home to penguins, sea lions and cormorants. Please be advised that most islands are not accessible so as not to disturb the nesting colonies. However, you do enjoy a spectacular view from the boat.
