La Digue -

the Seychelles’ Jewel in the Crown

The Seychelles … the images that spring to mind are those of jumbled granite boulders set against a white sand beach lined by green palm trees gently swaying in the breeze. Anse Source D’Argent on La Digue appears to have been copied straight from a fairy tale. No picture postcard can do without a shot of the famous beach next to the L’Union Estate coconut plantation. It would surely have to be the word’s most photographed beach. And for good reason! The L’Union Estate premises are also a home to some of the Seychelles giant tortoises. An old farm introduces the interested visitor to the island’s old, traditional methods of producing vanilla and copra, dried coconut flesh for oil extraction. However, La Digue’s other side offers just as many fantastic attractions and photo opportunities. A holiday on the Seychelles would not be complete without a leisurely walk to the glossy catalogue-perfect bays Grande Anse and the adjacent Petite Anse and Anse Cocos. This beach stroll alone is worth the visit to La Digue: The breathtakingly beautiful beaches and the lush, tropical landscape are like a glimpse of Garden Eden. Life on a La Digue moves at a different pace. Oxcarts and bicycles are the dominant means of transportation. The relaxed island life quickly rubs off onto visitors. The atmosphere is simply charming and not found on any other Seychelles island. Scores of visitors have been attracted by the La Digue’s magic appeal. In recent years, especially Anse Source D’Argent has become a little crowded in high season. Secluded beaches and far-off bays, however, are so abundant a quiet spot is always at hand. La Digue is still very much worth the trip. Our recommendation: Visit La Digue in low season to avoid the crowds. Those who prefer the bustle and the range of comforts a larger island offers may also choose one of Praslin’s luxury hotels and visit La Digue on a day trip. The idyllic ride on an old schooner takes only 30 minutes - it is almost too short. Transfers to the jetty will be kindly arranged by your hotel management. The islands are also stunning sight from the air! A helicopter service may also take you to La Digue in a whiff. Ask your pilot to give the island a wide circle before touching down. It will be memorable sight not easily forgotten. However you choose to visit it … La Digue will work its magic on you, its great beauty and intact nature spellbinding you!
