In Northwest Namibia, halfway between the Skeleton Coast and the Etosha National Park, the adventurous visitor discovers one of Namibia’s most striking landscapes: the desert and semi-desert region called Damaraland. First and foremost, the Damaraland enjoys a reputation for its geological and archaeological sights. One of these sights is Namibia’s highest mountain, the Brandberg Mountain. A climb to the summit is worth the effort. The persevering mountaineer is rewarded with a spectacular panorama of the harsh landscape all around. Apart from the Brandberg, a number of bizarre stone formations inspire the visitor. Camera at the ready, a petrified forest, the surrealistic Vingerklip and the Spitzkoppe make fantastic photo subjects. Other renowned attractions are the San tribe’s ancient rock paintings and carvings at Twyfelfontein which date back between 2400 and 6000 years. The San used quartz crystals to cut the sandstone several millimetres deep. Scientists categorise the historic art into six periods. At just kilometres’ distance, the so-called organ-pipes rise above the ground. Five metres high and more then a million years old, the awe-inspiring basalt pillars are all the wear and tear of millennia of erosion left standing amidst a riverbed. The scenery is framed by the Brandberg, the Burned Mountain. The mountain owes its name to the soot black colour of the rock which suggests that only recently an infernal fire consumed the entire mountain. However, several oases of lush vegetation and vibrant life pepper the rough-faced Damaraland. Several rivers and fresh water springs cast a spider web of bright green lifelines over the desert. Where there is water there is life. Wildlife well-adapted to the harsh conditions of the desert seeks out these oases. Among the species that can be encountered are elephants and black rhinos as well as mountain zebras, giraffes, elands, springboks and kudus. A perfect basis to explore the exotic wildlife and surrealistic wonders of the Damaraland is the Palmwag Rhino Camp, certainly one of the best safari options outside the Etosha National Park.
