BAY OF ISLANDS & NORTHLAND -

The Bay of Islands, New Zealand’s beach and sailing destination, is located approximately three to four hours north of Auckland. More than 140 lush islands and tiny islets pepper a vast bay with shimmering, blue water. Set sails and explore brilliantly white sand beaches or visit the three main seaside destinations Paihia, Kerikeri and Russel. Both the locals and visitors from all over the world flock to the beaches and islands, however, without ever crowding the Bay of Islands.

Nothing beats a boat tour to explore the Bay -of course, a sailing yacht is preferable- with a picnic on one of the islands included. The wind, the water, the billowing sails, turquoise water and salty air: A day out in the bay is pure bliss for the soul! A distant but wildly beautiful region, the Northland boasts the pristine Waipuoa Kauri Forest National Park – a primary forest that features New Zealand’s two highest Kauri Trees. The mighty Tane Mahuta, “God of the Forest”, is soaring 51 metres high and measures 14 metres around the base. It is calculated to be more than 1400 years old. Tane Mahuta bends the necks backwards in awe. It is almost a little intimidating to stand in front of the living giant, which has been there for so many centuries. Waipoua Forest definitely merits the trip. Explore the lush green, mystical forest, gurgling streams and rushing waterfalls.

Even farther north, Cape Reinga and its picturesque lighthouse mark the point where the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean. And on route, you can put in a stop at the Ninety-Mile Beach - you are sure to find a quiet beach spot here!

Nature, beach and sceneries aside for a moment, stop by the Waitangi Treaty House for fascinating insights into the Maori culture. The visitor centre has wonderfully designed exposition on the settlement of New Zealand and the beliefs and customs of the original inhabitants.
