Mahé Island Travel Experiences -

High Mountains and Picturesque Bays

Beautiful Mahé is not only the Seychelles capital island but the attractive town Victoria is also the cultural and economic hub of the archipelago. Should you travel to the Seychelles, do not miss out on the opportunity to discover Mahé. It is a gorgeous island, rich in contrasts and natural beauty. It is also the right place for a deeper insight into the life of the Seychellois, a colourful people of multiple ancestry. Stunning scenery galore may be found especially in the south of the Mahé. Countless, secluded bays face turquoise seas. A beauty so forceful, it appears almost unrealistic. It is most fascinating: Most of these heavenly beaches are completely deserted. Especially the Anse Intendance features a truly impressive scenery: Crystal clear waters and a blindingly white sand beach fringed by vibrantly green coconut palms. Many a seasoned traveller has rediscovered his inner child frolicking in the gentle surf. Please note, however, the apparent peace can at times be misleading. Strong currents may occur. The mountainous hinterland provides an engaging contrast to the tropical beach life. A stunning scenery, a breathtakingly divers ecosystem and lush vegetation invite you to explore. Numerous endemic plants are found in the mountains, first among them the famous Pitcher Plant, a carnivorous plant shaped like a chalice which is only found on the Seychelles at high altitudes. The best means to discover these plants is, of course, a hike to one of the peaks of the mountain range dividing Mahé from North to South. A word of caution: Many of the trails are highly demanding and should not be attempted without a local guide. Victoria is definitely worth a visit and, incidentally, the world’s smallest capital. Its principal attractions are the charming colonial buildings, the colourful markets and the superb botanical gardens. On Victoria’s doorstep, the St. Anne Marine National Park and the countless islands and islets it includes represent a fantastic day out on a catamaran, sailing for pure joy. An insider’s tip: Take the short walk down to the Sauzier Waterfall where a natural lagoon offers the chance for a refreshing dip amongst palm trees and lush, tropical vegetation. Allow Mahé to cast its charm of colours and contrasts on you! It will hold you captive, that is for certain!
