Kwa Zulu Natal -

Welcome to the Zulu Kingdom

The province of KwaZulu-Natal is situated in the east of South Africa, nestled between the Drakensberg mountain range in the west and the Indian Ocean in the east. Swaziland forms the northern border, and to its south lies the Eastern Cape. The name of the province is a combination of KwaZulu (home of the Zulus) and the former name of the province, Natal. KwaZulu-Natal is the setting of a very touching history: Britons and Boers alike continually clashed with the ever-resistant Zulu king, Shaka, who had fought hard to establish a mighty kingdom. Today the Battlefields still bare evidence of the bloody battles that took place between these three enemies. However, it was the Britons who eventually prevailed. 1842 saw the demise of the Voortrekkers and in 1844 Natal became a British Crown Colony. The Zulus proved to be more resistant, but in 1887 they surrendered: KwaZulu was officially annexed by Natal. After the dismantling of Apartheid and the conclusion of the first democratic elections, the province was renamed KwaZulu-Natal. Pietermaritzburg shares the title of provincial capital with the traditional capital of Zululand, Ulundi. Today KwaZulu-Natal, with its subtropical climate, prides itself as a wonderful tourist destination. Subdivided into eight different regions, it has enough to offer each and every visitor. Whether it be the Durban metropole, the majestic Drakensberg mountain range with its rock paintings, the picturesque beaches along the south coast, the densely inhabited Umfolozi and Hluhluwe game reserves or the bird paradise at the St. Lucia Wetland Park – every holiday visitor is sure to find that something special here. KwaZulu-Natal – complete in its diversity!
