Ulusaba is Sir Richard Branson’s private game reserve in the Sabi Sand Reserve in South Africa. The name Ulusaba means ‘place of little fear’, so named because the koppie, or hill, on which Rock Lodge sits provided the ancient Shangaan tribal warriors with the perfect lookout point.

Ulusaba has 20 rooms and suites spread over two lodges: Rock Lodge, including the beautiful Cliff Lodge, and Safari Lodge. Guests can stay in one of the two lodges, or split the time between both for the ultimate safari experience.

 

The Rock Lodge is perched upon a rocky hill commanding a breath-taking view of the of game-rich bush below and the Drakensberg Mountains far in the distance. The view inside is just as spectacular and the granite rock of the koppie is a key feature of the main house’s design and each room has a different design reflecting African tribal influences and style. Located a short walk from the Main House at Rock Lodge, Cliff Lodge features two magnificent suites offering guests the ultimate in safari luxury.

 

Safari Lodge fits snugly into the bush located beneath a canopy of ancient trees on the edge of a dry riverbed. You’ll love the sense of adventure as you access some of the rooms by swing bridges. Your room will provide fascinating views of the animals as they stroll past on their way to the nearby watering hole.

 

Ulusaba is known for the quality of its safari experience and has some of the most experienced Rangers and Trackers in the country. You’ll traverse over 13,500 hectares of private reserve with your dedicated Ranger and Tracker who will tailor your game drive just for you! During twice daily game drives and safari walks, guests will have the opportunity to spot lions, leopards, elephants and many more animals!

Living

Ulusaba operates “hotel style” where guests book individual rooms, although one or both lodges can also be hired exclusively for larger groups or special celebrations. Ulusaba offers exceptional luxury with all meals and drinks including a top quality wine list and sparkling wines, twice daily game drives, complimentary mini bar and more, included in the rates.

Rock Lodge is perched on the top of a koppie with stunning views across the landscape. There are 8 rooms at Rock Lodge, including the Master Suite, Makwela Suites, Rock Cliff rooms and the two-bedroom Rock Suite.

 

Just a short walk from the main house is Cliff Lodge, a private two-bedroom suite.  When you book both suites for exclusive use, we include your own chef and private vehicle for game drives, and you have full use of a private gym and spa treatment room. Cliff Lodge can accommodate a maximum of five adults and four children when booked exclusively.

 

Safari Lodge is built along the banks of a dry riverbed, Safari Lodge guests cross swing bridges between the exquisite tree house style rooms. Safari Lodge has 10 rooms made up of Elephant Rooms, River Rooms and two private suites: Tree house and Safari. Treehouse suite is a spacious and very unique suite featuring a private deck with views over Xikwenga Dam where hippos and elephants come to bathe.

 

Safari Suite is next to the Main Lodge and is accessed through its own entrance into a walled garden with boma fire pit. There is a separate spacious lounge that opens onto a large viewing deck with plunge pool, outdoor shower and private dining table for up to 8 guests. The suite boasts an en-suite bathroom with a separate WC and an additional guest bathroom next to the lounge. The Safari Suite can be interconnected with the Safari Room to sleep up to 4 guests.

There are endless dining options from a traditional Braai in the heart of the bush to a private meal just for two under the stars, and wine lovers will love to explore our well-stocked cellar. For an out-of-this-world experience we recommend stargazing from the Bush observatory where Rangers share unrivalled knowledge of the constellations that can be seen.
