And, of course, there are plenty of comfortable armchairs, a CD-player, TV, a DVD library as well as music CDs and a selection of books and magazines. Everything is in place to keep you entertained even on a rainy day.

 

John and Meg, the two owners, constructed the Riverrun Lodge six years ago on their 400 hectares large property. The location is perfect: Despite the wilderness setting, Wanaka is only a five and Queenstown only a sixty minutes’ drive away.

 

It does not come as a surprise that the two former globetrotters immediately fell in love with the Queenstown region. Having finally settled down, they pledged to make their guests supremely comfortable and to always be at their side to plan adventures around Lake Wanaka.

Living

The friendly and cosy ambience spells holiday – make yourself at home! The comfortable rooms are equipped with finest linen, extra-large towels, fragrant soaps and eiderdown bedding.

 

The Clutha rooms are slightly larger and boast king-sized beds and a TV with video. Almost as large, the Cardrona rooms are fitted with queen-sized beds and feature a direct access to the veranda. Extra beds are available on request.

 

Of course, every unit offers a luxurious ensuite bathroom. The stunning view of the Southern Alps is another common feature. And to ensure your absolute comfort, there are books, magazines, chocolate, nuts, courtesy tea and coffee and a beverage service.

 

Should you need to stay in touch, a fax machine and internet are available on request. However, it is much more recommendable to spend your time in the garden whirlpool with a view of the snow-capped peaks and Lake Wanaka’s golden terraces.

 

Inhale deeply, savouring the crisp mountain air and admire the romantic sunsets from the veranda. A glass of wine at hand, chat to the other guests or cuddle up with your loved one.

Activities

Lake Wanaka offers a set of characteristics that are hard to find elsewhere: Gardens, glaciers and mountains are all side by side. Explore lush lowlands, snow-capped peaks, deep valleys, crystal-clear rivers and glittering lakes.

 

The serene tranquillity and gorgeous mountain panorama are just perfect for supreme relaxation. Tie up your hiking boots and set off exploring. The summer months from December to March are hot and dry, the nights mild.

 

The air is rich with the fragrance from pine trees, roses and lupines. The summer is also the perfect time for water sports: The Wanaka Lake and Clutha River allow for waterskiing, swimming, fishing, sailing or kayaking to name just a few…

 

From the water to the air: A tandem paragliding flight is another exciting option and parasailing is also being offered. Two paragliding schools in Wanaka offer these thrilling activities.

 

And, just in case there should be some rain, the indoor activities include the NZ Fighter Pilots Museum, the Puzzling World and the famous Wanaka Beerworks – one of New Zealand’s finest beer breweries.

 

Wanaka is also the departure point for helicopter and aircraft transfers to New Zealand’s west coast as well as to the Mount Aspiring National Park and the Milford Sound.

 

A change of season, the autumn months from end of March to mid May paint the landscape in colours of bright red and orange. The spectacular sceneries make it the perfect time of year for trekking or mountain bike tours.

 

June to September are the winter months and Wanaka is famous for its world-class skiing: Cardrona offers just the right skiing for families and Treble Cone is paradise for the more advanced two-board artist.

 

No matter the time of year, having spent a long day out and about, treat yourself to a relaxing massage applied by caring hands followed by a sundowner. Later, settle down on the veranda and indulge in a delicious dinner accompanied by one of the excellent New Zealand wines.
