The Garden Route is located about 400 km west of Cape Town. It officially starts at Mossel Bay and stretches about 200 kilometres to Port Elizabeth. The term “route” does not refer to a street but much rather to an entire coastline. Amidst the coastal splendour, hidden between George and Knysna, you will find the wonderful town Wilderness which local people also call Eden.
Wilderness is situated between the Kaaimans River and the Goukama nature reserve, at the foot of the Outeniqua Mountains. It is well-known for its calm lake and beautiful beaches. Wilderness is surrounded by a number of rivers, natural lakes and lagoons and this makes it a popular water sport destination. Wilderness also houses a large variety of species, especially birds.
For this reason, the area is especially popular among birding enthusiasts. However, plenty of other leisure activities are available: Hiking, dolphin and whale watching, paragliding, horseback riding, mountain bike tours, scenic drives, fishing and boat trips to name but a few.
The small town Wilderness also has a lot to offer: Quite recently, a new shopping centre has been erected, accommodating many fantastic restaurants.
