Little Mombo Camp is located on the island of the same name. Little Mombo Island is situated in the pristine Okavango Delta, just off the northern tip of Chief’s Island.

 

Both Chef’s and Mombo Islands lie within the Moremi Game Reserve - a zone where safari permit numbers are strictly limited. For this reason, Mombo and Little Mombo are highly secluded and exclusive retreats.

 

The abundance of wildlife that calls these regions home is mind-blowing. Elephants, both the white and the black read more » rhinoceros and predators such as lions, leopards and cheetahs all live alongside large herds of buffalos and tiny steenboks.

 

The large numbers are attributed to the unique location of this region. The Moremi Game Reserve is ideally situated between the Kalahari Desert, Chef’s Island and the flood and grasslands of the Okavango.

 

When the yearly rains and the ensuing floods reach this region between March and May, the larger mammals move to the rich grasslands and acacia vegetation of Chef’s Island.

 

The marshlands are peppered with soaring hardwood trees, which offer shade, food, nesting places and safety for the region’s large animal and bird populations.

 

It is not until September or October that the water levels recede, leaving behind short but lush green grass on the floodplains, just when the large island becomes seriously dry.

 

The seasonal availability of this rich food source draws an exciting and diverse range of animals into the Mombo area, among them elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards and cheetahs.

 

Sporting such incredible wildlife diversity, both mammals and birds, it is not surprising that many documentaries have been filmed in the Mombo region.

 

National Geographic and the BBC are just some of the companies who have sent their camera crews. The area is a bird watcher’s paradise: especially aquatic birds are regularly spotted.

 

Little Mombo is an extension of the main Mombo Camp. It is located under a huge shady canopy of trees with spectacular views out over the surrounding plains.

 

The fact that the entire camp is made up of only three tents means that it offers absolute privacy and refined luxury: just right for a romantic getaway for two or for honeymooners.

 

The rooms and the connecting boardwalks are built some two metres above ground level, which allows the area’s animals free access through the camp, while at the same time ensuring the safety of the guests.

 

The dining room, bar and lounge all offer amazing views of the floodplains and the plunge pool provides a very welcome cool-off from the heat of the day.
