Kulala Desert Lodge

Hotel

The Kulala Desert Lodge is located at the heart of the Namib Desert amidst a 210 square kilometres large private reserve bordering the pristine Namib Naukluft Park.

The Kulala Lodge’s biggest asset is certainly the stunning backdrop and the magnificent view it commands of the Sossusvlei’s red sand dunes, the soaring mountains and wide open plains.

Twelve thatched roof canvas chalets, named Kulalas, which is the Oshiwambo word for “sleep”, accommodate the distinguished guests. Each read more » unit has been constructed atop a timber platform to maximise the airflow and features an en suite bathroom with a shower.

Those who enjoy intimate nature experiences can ask to have their bed carried to the rooftop (a special space has been set aside for this purpose) for a romantic night of star gazing – an awe-inspiring sensation in the desert.

The Kulala Desert Lodge’s beautifully set main building accommodates a lounge, a bar, the dining room and a plunge pool.

A spacious veranda fully encircles the building and allows for a perfect view and excellent photographing opportunities of the adjacent waterhole. Water naturally being a limited resource in the desert, the waterhole attracts plenty of desert wildlife parading undisturbed in front of the keen observer.

Activities

The Kulala Desert Lodge offers game drives through the private reserve. The game drives are as entertaining as they are educative and represent a fine way of discovering the exotic desert wildlife and read more » landscape.

A unique highlight of any itinerary could be a balloon flight high above the desert. At the break of day, the 60 to 90 minutes flight starts and quickly one soars above the picturesque dunes and harsh desert. Upon softly touching down, still at an early hour, celebrate your memorable desert flight with a stylish champagne breakfast directly at the landing site.

Bordering the world’s oldest desert, the region is suitable for safaris and wildlife observation to a certain extent only. However, the animals that do inhabit the harsh environment, like the Springbok, the Eland or the Ostrich, are truly impressive and masterfully adapted to the ecosystem.

Our recommendation is to join a game drive by night, accompanied by the exotic sounds of the bush once the sun sets. With the help of a search light, you may see small mammals like the Aardwolf, the Bat-Eared Fox or perhaps even the Laughing Hyena.
