The Kosi Forest Lodge lies within the Kosi Bay Nature Reserve, a magical place of lakes, rivers, unspoiled beaches, bush and coastal woods.

 

The game reserve is situated north of Durban in the Maputaland, part of the Kosi Bay river-system and the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park, declared a world cultural heritage site.

 

This 11.000-hectare and 30-kilometres-long area is a tropical paradise of lakes, marshy land, swampland and coastal woods, which provides a home to more than 250 different kinds read more » of birds.

 

The Kosi Forest Lodge is the only private lodge in the nature reserve. The Greater St Lucia Wetland Park has been categorised as a malaria risk zone, therefore please consider a malaria prophylaxis up-front.

The lodge lies within wonderful woods on the sandbanks of the Kosi Lake. The thatched-roof bush suites offer a lot of space in a tranquil surrounding.

 

Exciting open-air bathrooms allow you to experience the graceful nature even while having a shower.

 

The big Zulu Podberry tree is a true eye-catcher in front of the main-lodge with its lounge, dining room and bar. All rooms open to a wooden platform around the tree. Due to the mild climate, almost all meals are served open-air – sheltered by the big Albizia trees.

 

The swimming pool is set into in a wooden deck and offers beautiful views out over the lake. The lodge does not dispose of electricity – in the evening candle light illuminates the lodge and floods everything with a romantic ambience.

The thatched-roof suites (6 double rooms, one family suite and one honeymoon suite) nestle beneath the shade of the trees and offer a lot of privacy.

 

The rooms are built on a wooden deck and contain read more » a bed- and separate dressing-room as well as an open-air-bathroom with a shower. The low-ceilinged bedrooms are equipped with canvas-shutters and mosquito nets. Through the open windows, one enjoys a beautiful and wide view of the surrounding woods.

Activities

The best way to explore the Kosi Bay nature reserve is by canoe. Enjoy the water world of the reserve while paddling through the lakes and canals at Raffía Forest.

Enjoy the underwater world snorkelling the warm waters of the Indian Ocean with its unique spectrum of subtropical fish.

 

A special highlight is the “Turtle-Tracking” between November and February. At this time, turtles come back to the place where they were born to lay their eggs. Without disturbing the turtles, this impressive spectacle can be watched here.

 

Furthermore, boat tours on Kosi Lake can be booked. Excursions to Tembe Elephant Park as well as the Thonga Cultural Adventure can be organised, where one receives a profound insight into the traditional life of the Thonga.
