The best time to travel to Tanzania is any time of the year: No rainy season or other climatic limitations affect the holiday experience. However, the diverse landscapes create different climate zones. The entire coastline, including Zanzibar, features a warm, tropical climate. On the islands, a cool breeze brings relief most of the days. The central plateau is at an average altitude of 1,200 metres. Daytime temperatures can be high but the nights are surprisingly cold. The area of the great lakes, the Lake Victoria and the Lake Tangayika, is characterised by high humidity. The Usambara Mountains, northwest of Tanga and not far from the Kilimanjaro, feature a mild climate. The only regularly occurring heavy rainfalls can be expected on Zanzibar and Pemba Island in April and May. It is recommendable to avoid a visit to the islands in these two months and rather visit between June and November, the driest season.
