Wharekauhau Lodge – Remarkable Luxury and Fine AmbienceA farm holiday – only infinitely more luxurious than the concept usually implies. Founded as a sheep-farming homestead in the 1840s, the Wharekauhau Lodge can nowadays claim to rank among New Zealand’s finest hotels and has secured a membership in the celebrated association Small Luxury Hotels of the World.
Despite many great changes in the long history of the Wharekauhau Lodge, the sheep have stayed. Wharekauhau on the New Zealand’s North Island’s south coast was and still is one of the country’s largest sheep farms.
Pronounced “Forry-ko-ho”, Wharekauhau means “place of knowledge” translated from the Maori language. Legend has it that the Maori’s holy men came to this sacred site to receive their initiation into the ranks of the priests.
And taking the magnificent surroundings into account, the pristine nature and stunning views of the ocean, it is quite comprehensible that the Maori sought out this beautiful spot for their most sacred rites.
Lush, green forests, lonely beaches and crystal-clear lakes and rivers create a gorgeous setting - a nature paradise par excellence. Breathe the clean air and unplug from the stress and tension of everyday life.
Returning to the Wharekauhau Lodge, step into the old-fashioned great hall to settle down in one of the cosy armchairs next to a crackling fire. It is a popular spot for a chat with the other guests or to sip an aperitif before dinner.
Most certainly you will first be welcomed by the Wharekauhau’s cat – a regular guest that has become something like the lodge’s mascot. And indeed, it seems to enjoy the gracious country manor just as much as you do.
The Wharekauhau Lodge also takes perfect care of your culinary wellbeing, of course, accompanied by one of the region’s superb wines. Lean back and indulge! It is just the right setting to spoil yourself a little!
