Los Angeles – City of AngelsLos Angeles – in short L.A. – is many things: vast, glamorous, pulsating with life and both fascinating and intimidating. It is a city of superlatives that fears no comparisons. L.A. sets the trends and, for those that swim on the wave of success, fulfils the promise of the sweet life beneath California’s hot sun.
Los Angeles is larger and more diverse than the mind can grasp. No matter which way you point your toes, your feet will lead you to the discovery of a new aspect: For example, downtown with its soaring skyscrapers, sophisticated hotels and imposing bank buildings.
Of course, there is the legendarily exclusive Beverly Hills featuring Rodeo Drive, perfect for a shopping (de-)tour. Just around the corner, Hollywood is the heart of the film industry and the Universal Studios promise entertainment at its finest. Back on the beach, Santa Monica and Long Beach are the most stylish haunts for a Pacific splash.
Those that visit Los Angeles for the first time are drawn almost invariably to Hollywood to stroll the Walk of Fame and to experience the flair of the industry of illusions, the hub of the movie business.
However, the Hollywood hype and glamour has past its peak. Many of the production companies have moved north-west to the suburb Burbank. Nevertheless, the magic Hollywood stands for is still strong and captivating.
Saunter down the boulevard of movie screen legends and picture yourself a part of this glamorous world. Maybe you will enjoy the chance to visit a premier at the famous and nostalgic Mann’s Chinese Theatre, where star and starlets make their appearance in pompous stretch-limos.
No visit to L.A. is complete without a tour of celebrated Beverly Hills. Rodeo Drive became famous with the legendary movie Pretty Woman. Our recommendation is to settle down in a street café and watch the illustrious passer-by’s. Frequently the one or other celebrity can be spotted among the shoppers.
Santa Monica is the place to be for beach thrills. The wide sand beaches stretch from Malibu in the north to Redondo Beach in the south. Having starred in many Hollywood flicks, the gracious Santa Monica Pier still boasts the classic Ferris wheel as well as many other thrill rides.
The cheerful bustle of Santa Monica is rivalled only by the buzzing vibe of nearby Venice Beach. The colourful flair is partly due to the countless T-shirt vendors, the snack bars, fortune tellers, acrobats and self-proclaimed artists of every shade and variety.
Attracting attention is a lifestyle: sweating bodybuilders train excessively on the beach while sparsely clad beauties parade past. The many bodies and fanciful folks almost let one overlook the breathtaking splendour of the beach and the vast Pacific Ocean sending its waves rolling up the sand.
Theme parks like Disneyland, endless beaches or the pulsating nightlife on Melrose Avenue – Los Angeles radiates international flair, diversity and style. TV series like Melrose Place or Beverly Hills 90210 have made it clear: “Life is Easy” and the credo is “Have Fun”.
Whereas might not be true for the entirety of the local population, a stop-over in L.A. is certainly about taking a wild ride on the good side of life. Los Angeles is definitely worth a stop for those travelling to Australia.
