Gondwana Canyon Lodge The Gondwana Canyon Lodge is situated in a private nature reserve of the same name, the Gondwana Canyon Park managed by the Gondwana Desert Collection.
In total, four private nature reserves form the Gondwana Desert Collection. All four are located in Namibia’s far South which is characterised by its spectacular desert landscapes.
The Gondwana Kalahari Park lies amidst the bright red Kalahari dunes just northeast of Mariental. The Gondwana Cañon Park is situated next to the famous Fish River Canyon and the Gondwana Sperrgebiet-Rand Park, famous for its wild horses, on the fringes of the Succulent Karoo west of Aus.
Last but not least, the Gondwana Namib Park features the petrified dunes north of Sesriem and the Sossusvlei. The four extraordinary private reserves are linked by the legendary Gondwana Desert Route that curves through Namibia’s South in the form of a horseshoe.
Committed to sustainable tourism, great part of the revenue raised by the Gondwana Collection is reinvested into nature conservation activities. Simultaneously, the lodges and restaurants create employment and career opportunities for the local population.
The Gondwana Cañon Park forms part of the Nama Karoo Desert and the Fish River Canyon. The second largest canyon in the world, the ragged terrain is peppered with the exotic Quiver Trees. The tree’s peculiar shape and the bright yellow blossoms contrasts strikingly with the intensely blue desert sky.
Protecting more than 1120 square kilometres and acquired in 1995, the Cañon Park is the first and the largest of the Gondwana’s private reserves.
Springboks, gemsboks, red hartebeests, ostriches and mountain zebras thrive in the protected but nevertheless harsh terrain. Visit the spectacular Sundowner Bar built into the rock face and enjoy the magnificent panorama of the Fish River Canyon from the main lookout.
At a mere 20 kilometres’ distance from the afore mentioned, celebrated lookout, the Gondwana Canyon Lodge is most conveniently located.
The gracious lodge has been built with natural stone and –a most intriguing design- partly been integrated into the rough rock face and the giant boulders. It was the declared intention to cause only a minimum impact on the ecosystem and the natural appearance of the pristine surroundings.
The 25 bungalows feature straw-thatched roofs and have also been constructed with natural stone. Consequently they blend most harmonically with the granite boulders and give the guest the feeling of being lodged amidst the rugged nature.
The lodge is not luxury accommodation in the classic sense. However, it is a stirring experience to be lodged amidst the rocks. The intact nature and unique ambience are more than fair compensation for the minor lack of comfort.
The luxury available in abundance lies in the serene tranquillity and inspiring remoteness of the wild but beautiful landscape.
The Canyon Lodge’s superb restaurant dishes up sumptuous treats to indulge in and has been most lovingly decked out to bring the early days of pioneers settling in the area back to life.
A horse, an all-terrain vehicle or a walking stick are your transport options for discovering the park’s beauty. Alternatively, unwind, enjoying the peace and quiet and read a book under tall trees or next to the beautifully-set swimming pool.
