Located as it is, in the outer, north-east corner of the Okavango Delta, one of the most isolated camps in the region is the Duba Plains. This reserve is approximately 30,000 hectares in size and lies north-west of Maun.
The wide-reaching plains are flooded as a rule from May until October and are home to countless species of wildlife. This area is home to lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes and many kinds of antelopes. Dine in style alfresco on a raised deck, and take in the sights all around you. The true highlight at the Duba Plains Lodge is the animals all around. Huge herds of buffalo are trailed by large numbers of lion. Lechwe and sable Antelope graze their way across the savannah, while elephants search for their food on the islands. Hippos congregate in the deeper canals; leopards favour the wooded islands.
Countless birds reward the ornithologist or the bird-lover with spectacular sighting. Don’t arrive without your binoculars, your camera, and your video camera. Without these, you might miss the chance to record unforgettable moments for friends and family who couldn’t accompany you.

Therefore, Duba Plains offers a magnificently private ambience, giving you the peace you need to relax between camp activities – whether on your private veranda with view over the surroundings, or in the small but refreshing plunge pool.
Built on a wooden platform, every luxury tent comes with its own en-suite bathroom, with a shower and toilet. A spacious, comfortable veranda offers plenty of space to relax, while the interior is equipped with large double bed draped in crisp linen, good ventilation and 220V electricity for lighting and power. The tent itself is protected from the harsh sun by an extra shade-sail.
When the weather's dial is turned to heat, windows provide good cross-ventilation. When it’s cooler, or at night, roller blinds keep you cosy; and your privacy is ensured with curtains all around. Of course, all windows and doors have insect screens.
The paths between the tents and the main building are checked and raked daily, and after dark, you’ll be led by guides between the buildings. The main building offers a cosy lounge and bar with adjoining dining room, where you’ll dine together with the camp rangers.
It’s here on the raised deck where you’ll be served exquisite meals. And the perfect end to an exciting day is a Sundowner at the bar. Cheers!
Activities
The Duba Plains Camp is ideally located to enable you to tour to other islands, marshlands and swamps all around. The variety of activities available is dependant on the water level at the time.
You read more » can choose between animal safaris in an open all-terrain vehicle, day trips in a dugout canoe or bush safaris on foot. Perhaps most interesting is the Mokoro trip: you travel in a dugout canoe, which is powered by a “Poler” with his long wooden staff.
In this way, you move almost soundlessly through the water, and can hear all the variety of animal calls in the bush. It’s remarkably beautiful to enjoy the croaking frogs, the twittering birds, the hiss of a predator.
Mokoro trips are at their best from May until October, when the water levels are at their highest. At other times of the year, game drives by day or night are the principle activity. Safaris on foot are also a very intense experience.
On foot, eye to eye with the local wildlife at the Okavango Delta .. it is a pulse-quickening activity! But have no fear - you’re in safe hands with the experienced local guides, allowing you to get as close as possible in complete safety.
It can of course happen that the lion is late for the photo appointment, despite some fifty animals inhabiting the area around Duba Plains. After all, this isn’t a zoo! However, we feel sure you won’t go home without giving your camera a good workout: perhaps you’ll be lucky to spot a few nocturnal neighbours on one of the night game drives.
Talking about the evening: a very special highlight is a night out in the bush. After walking into the area where you’ll be staying, pitch a tent and spend the night in the African wilderness under the star-filled heavens above.
