Cultural Discoveries in Southeast Asia

The Kingdom of Cambodia is located in Southeast Asia on the north-eastern shores of the Gulf of Thailand between Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. Few travellers have visited Cambodia, but these select few are full of praise: Cambodia is celebrated for its Khmer culture and these ancient peoples’ imposing architectural achievements. First and foremost, of course, there is the world-famous Angkor region – seat of the Khmer empire and in many ways archeologically unrivalled in all of Asia! The “Great Capital” or “Great City” Angkor Thom lies framed by a broad moat and defensive walls. At the heart of the vast site lies the Bayon, a temple graced by a number of towers elaborately decorated with magnificently hewn and several meters high stone faces. Angkor Wat features on every Cambodia itinerary. Most visitors hold their breath in admiration when first setting their eyes on the marvellous stone temples. The walls have been richly decorated with carved figures often resembling dancers. However, there is a lot more to see and experience. The Ta Prohm ruins, dating back to the 12th and 13th century, are also well worth a visit. It is most impressive how towering trees have wrapped their massive roots around the ancient stones. Having explored Angkor at your leisure, there are countless other sensational attractions to be discovered in Cambodia. The country’s east is criss-crossed by the mighty Mekong, one of the world’s ten longest rivers. At the heart of Cambodia lies Southeast Asia’s largest sweet water lake: the vast Tonle Sap. The landscape around the lake is dominated by a central plain. In the southwest the Tonle Sap is framed by the Cardamom and Elephant Mountains, in the north by the Dongrek Mountains. The highly diverse landscape and lush nature have resulted in an abundance of flora and fauna. No less than 630 protected wildlife species may be found in Cambodia. And then, of course, there are the country’s lively cities. Phnom Penh is a most fascinating city to visit. Another recommendation goes to vibrant Siem Reap close to Angkor. The capital Phnom Penh is located in Cambodia’s south and provides a home for approximately 1.5 million people. It is most scenically set on the banks of a river and has recently experienced a revival of cultural activity and gastronomy. Phnom Penh’s chief attractions are the Royal Palace, the towering Stupa Wat Phnom and the elegant French colonial villas. The lively Siem Reap, located just ten kilometres north of Lake Tonle Sap, offers a number of attractions and a lively flair. Moreover, it serves as base camp for a visit to the nearby Angkor Wat. Explore fascinating Cambodia at your leisure and allow yourself to fall under the spell cast by the country’s great natural beauty, its cultural treasures and friendly people.
